Tenormin is an oral prescription drug prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension), alleviating angina symptoms, and enhancing survival rates following a heart attack. It may also be utilized for other purposes "off-label," such as treating migraines or anxiety.
Tenormin belongs to a category of medications known as beta-adrenergic blocking agents, commonly referred to as beta blockers. It works by blocking a specific type of beta receptor, termed beta-1 receptors. By inhibiting beta-1 receptors, this medication counteracts the effects of stress hormones like adrenaline (epinephrine). It leads to a reduction in heart rate and lowers both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as well as decreasing the heart's workload, meaning that the heart requires less blood and oxygen to function effectively.
Tenormin is classified as a beta-adrenergic blocking agent. It inhibits the functions of the sympathetic nervous system, which is part of the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system typically accelerates the heartbeat. By blocking these nerves' actions, Tenormin lowers the heart rate and is effective in managing abnormally fast heart rhythms. Additionally, it diminishes the strength of heart muscle contractions and lowers blood pressure. By slowing the heart rate and lessening the contraction force, Tenormin reduces the oxygen demand of the heart muscle. Given that angina occurs when the heart's oxygen demand surpasses its supply, Tenormin is beneficial in treating angina.
Continue taking this medication even if you feel fine. Avoid missing doses. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, provided it is more than 8 hours before your next scheduled dose. If it's less than 8 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing routine. Do not take two doses simultaneously.
